Peggy Joyce Chaney was born on May 11, 1933, the ninth of eleven siblings (the fifth of seven sisters), to Rev. Robert Lattie Chaney and Winnie Moss Chaney in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Please keep the family in mind as we struggle to deal with the unexpected loss of our sweet angel and Kevin’s dear mother, Peggy.
Peggy had a beautiful voice and sang in the choirs as well as solo at Eastside Baptist Church and Second Baptist Church of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, both of which she was a member of.
Peggy is best remembered for the decades she cooked at Peggy’s Restaurant in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, which she co-owned with her sister, Loretta Chaney. Stories are still told in Kings Mountain of her cooking, including her renowned biscuits.
After a lifetime of cooking, both at home and at “the cafe” Peggy always wanted to publish a cookbook. This web site was started to that end, to allow her to post recipes and memories which would later be collected and collated into a cookbook. Sadly, Peggy passed away before she could realize her dream. Mama Peggy's Recipes & Ruminations was published posthumously by her son, Kevin, in May of 2018.
Peggy’s hobbies included gardening, cross-stitch and helping anyone and everyone who needed a helping hand. Her gentle spirit, mischievous personality and warm, ready smile endeared her to everyone who ever met her. Peggy’s absence leaves a hole in all of our hearts.
Peggy died on December 30, 2011.

May 12, 2017 8:06 amI wanted to thank Ms. Peggy’s family for posting her recipes and wisdom. I just stumbled upon her website looking for a recipe that my mother made for new potatoes. My mother passed away unexpectedly this February 2017. Ms. Peggy’s cooking is just like my mom’s and is a comfort for me to have as a live through the first Mother’s Day without my dear mother. These recipes are like having my mom here to guide me. A heartfelt thanks. Your mom your be proud for passing on her legacy.
