Peggy’s Restaurant, Kings Mountain, NC

A collection of photos from Peggy’s Restaurant, which Mama Peggy started in the early 1970’s and later sold to her sister, Loretta (only to come back later and work for Loretta as cook). Peggy’s Restaurant was staffed mostly with family and served up good, old-fashioned home cooking. When it was operation at 415 North Piedmont Avenue, it was the go-to place for good food in Kings Mountain, North Carolina.

"I always had my hands in something! I still don't like for anyone to slip and take my picture!" ~ Mama, Peggy, May 21, 2010
"I wonder how many biscuits Mama Peggy made over 20+ years at Peggy's Restaurant?" ~ Mama Peggy, February 14, 2011
"Loretta was a little upset over something here! She had the most beautiful big black eyes! She wasn't mouthy like the rest of us Chaney girls but she had a wicked sense of humor! She could stop you in your tracks with some of her crazy comments! I still miss her so much! We were like we were joined at the hip most of our lives!" ~ Mama Peggy, May 21, 2010
"As you can see! Loretta didn't like her picture made either! That's beef Liver she's taking out! Getting ready for Peggy to throw in that old frying pan!!!!" ~ Mama Peggy, May 21, 2010
"We all loved Ollie! He would come in and make himself at home( Because he felt at home) Take refills around the tables to customers and just talk to them! He came to our family dinners at Christmas and Thanksgiving ! We would send plates to Miss Abby, his wife! I miss Ollie to this day! He was a great Senator and personal friend of Peggy's Restaurant." ~ Mama Peggy, May 21, 2010
"Just look at that mischief in Sherry's eyes! She had just took her arms and lifted up her bosom (for meanness as we used to say way back when we were young) Lib Stuart from the K.M.Herald snapped the picture and caught her just as she did that! Since her stroke ,she's doing quite well but the mischievousness is missing! I miss that part of her so much!" ~ Mama Peggy, May 21, 2010
"Our angel sister Edith and Ol' chubby chaney standing behind her ,as usual , a pan in her hand!" ~ Mama Peggy, May 21, 2010
Lucille Chaney Gladden at the original restaurant, which was located where Wesleyan Church is now on Piedmont Avenue.
Sherry Chaney, Loyd Short and Loretta Chaney. "I wonder! Did they put iced tea in those funny shaped bottles?" ~ Mama Peggy, May 21, 2010
"There is 'Sis' as we all called her because she always hated her name! It was Doretha and she would fight you if you called her that! She had had a stroke but lived just a little ways behimd the restaurant! Every day she would come up there and sit at the counter and talk to the customers! She loved it! I would turn around and look at her as I was always flying around like a chicken with my head cut off! We would instantly burst out laughing! It was a 'sister' thing! I miss her too! She was the "thinker" in our family!" ~ Mama Peggy, May 21, 2010
"This is Sue, probably getting ready to pick the meat off of about 10 chickens! I used them for chicken amd dumplings, one of our best sellers. Bless her heart! I was so picky, i didn't want any veins or anything left in the chicken I used! She complained a little but not much!" ~ Mama Peggy, May 21, 2010
